Foundation of NATO (1949)
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) is an international organisation without sovereign rights. Its member states retain their full sovereignty and independence. NATO is based on the North Atlantic Treaty in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter. The North Atlantic Treaty was signed on 4 April 1949 by Belgium, Denmark (with Greenland), France (with the French territories in Algeria), Great Britain (with Malta), Iceland, Italy, Canada, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the USA. It came into force on 24 August 1949. (wp)
