The Sicilian Cosa Nostra mafia was behind the attack, which took place on 23 May 1992, killing five people and injuring 23. Among the dead was Italian magistrate Giovanni Falcone and his wife Francesca Morvillo as well their three police escort agents. The attack was reportedly directed by Sicilian mafia 'boss of bosses,' Salvatore 'Toto' Riina.
