X-ray of a woman's foot and boot (1896). Early radiograph of a woman's foot seen in side view, wearing a boot. Bones and soft tissues of the foot are visible. The boot itself has metal ties, a metal support in the sole, and its heel is attached with nails. This X-ray was made by William Morton of New York, who published it in his textbook The X-ray (1896). X-rays had been discovered the previous year, 1895, by the German physicist Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen. He was awarded the first Nobel Prize for Physics for his discovery in 1901.
