Belgium-Swiss Professor Auguste Piccard took his steel bathysphere “Trieste” down to 1,051 meters (3,447 feet), to the bottom of the sea two miles south of the tourist Isle of Capri. The dive followed two unsuccessful attempts. Piccard said that he may try within a few weeks for 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) in the deep zone between the islands Ponza and Sardinia.
