ISLAND EISBERG FORMATION
[Stockbild] Iceberg formation. Aerialphotograph of icebergs calving (breaking away, upper right) from an ice front. An ice front is the vertical cliff of an ice shelf or glacier (as in this case). Calving is one way in which icebergs are formed. When an ice front arrives at the coast it becomes less stable and cracks develop. Huge chunks of ice often fall into the sea, which then float away as icebergs. The patterned ice (down left) is caused by volcanic ash, which has settled on the glacier and settled in crevasses on the surface. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/BERNHARD EDMAIER) === ===
