Even one year after the chemical accident at the chemical manufacturing plant Icmesa near Seveso, Italy, only workers in protective gear are allowed to stay in the area of danger zone A for cleaning and decontamination operations, pictured on July 7, 1977. On July 10, 1976, a reactor explosion takes place at Icmesa, an affiliate of Givaudan, at the periphery of the municipality of Meda near Milan, in which a cloud of dioxin is released. The wind subsequently spreads the poison across a large area and the cloud descends over the neighboring municipality of Seveso.
