Muhammad Ali in Switzerland (1971) by Eric Bachmann
Zurich-based Hansruedi Jaggi brought boxing legend Muhammad Ali to Zurich shortly before Christmas 1971, but not without informing photographer Eric Bachmann. The "Ali-Clan" was staying at the Hotel Atlantis, where Eric Bachmann first met Muhammad Ali on the 17th of December at eight o'clock in the morning in the hotel lobby. He came down the stairs wearing shoes that were very much the worse for wear and ripped tracksuit bottoms, and asked after a suitable place for a training run. Bachmann's answer was "Follow us" and an excursion up a local mountain in Zurich directly followed. While on this winter run on the Üetliberg, the champ asked whether this was the highest mountain in the world - although it again remained not entirely clear whether the boxer was joking or not. Later, Bachmann drove with Ali to Langstrasse so that he could replace his now completely soaked and worn-out shoes in the Schönbächler shoe store. It was the photographer however who settled the bill, as there were no Swiss francs in Ali's old tracksuit. (dob)
