Max Petitpierre (1899-1994)
Max Petitpierre, born on 26 February 1899 and deceased on 25 March 1994, was a Swiss lawyer and FDP politician. Petitpierre was elected to the Federal Council in 1944, where he headed the Political Department. During his long term of office as Federal Councillor, he was elected President of the Confederation three times. From 1946 onwards, he succeeded in consolidating Switzerland's position in the immediate post-war period thanks to the resumption of diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union and the signing of the Washington Agreement. During the Cold War, he organised foreign policy according to the principles of neutrality and solidarity. This prevented Switzerland from joining NATO, but allowed close economic cooperation with the West within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. (hls)
