Opening Wembley-Stadion (1923-2003)
The original Wembley Stadium opened on 28 April 1923 and was essentially used for football matches at national and international level, but also hosted the 1948 Olympics, the Live Aid concert and numerous other sporting and musical events. The stadium gained worldwide fame through the 1966 World Cup final, in which the legendary Wembley goal was scored. Brazilian world footballer Pelé referred to Wembley as the "cathedral", "capital" and "heart" of football in reference to its importance to international football. (wp)
