Vaclav Havel (1936-2011)
Vaclav Havel, writer and former President of the Czech Republic, born on 5 October 1936 and died on 18 December 2011. In the Prague Spring of 1968, Havel supported the reform-oriented course of Alexander Dubcek. As one of the main initiators of the Charter 77 civil rights movement, he was arrested several times and spent several years in prison. After 1989, he became the face of the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and was elected president. After the peaceful separation of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Havel was elected President of the Czech Republic in January 1993. (axa)
