K.D. Lang (*1961)
K.D.Lang was born Kathryn Dawn Lang on November 2, 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. Apart from her music, she attracted attention in 1990 when she became one of the first musicians of her time to live openly as a lesbian; her commitment to a vegetarian lifestyle was also quite new at the time. Lang is a practicing Buddhist. Typical for her is her powerful alto voice. She studied music, but came to singing through theater: During her studies, she participated in a theater production portraying singer Patsy Cline. She was fascinated by the life story and music of the country star, who died at an early age, and decided to become a singer. At first she also moved in country, but after a while she switched to pop. She sang "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen at the opening ceremony of the 2010 XXI Olympic Winter Games at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on February 12, 2010. (iwi)
