The "Solar Challenger" was a solar-powered electric aircraft developed by Paul MacCready's AeroVironment. It was powered exclusively by the photovoltaic cells on the wing and was the first aircraft of its kind suitable for long-distance flights. On 7 July 1981, it successfully completed a 262 km demonstration flight from France to England. (luk)
