USA - Soviet Union | START I Disarmament Treaty (1991)
START is the abbreviation for Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and refers to the disarmament agreement between the United States and the Soviet Union for the joint reduction of strategic nuclear weapon delivery systems. The Strategic Arms Reduction Talks - as they are also called - were originally initiated by US President Ronald Reagan in 1982 and signed by his successor George Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev on 31 July 1991, five months before the collapse of the Soviet Union. After another agreement, START II, emerged in the early 1990s, START was renamed START I. At the end of December 2009, the START I treaty expired. (wp)
