George Floyd (1st anniversary of death)
The killing of George Floyd occurred on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis in the U.S. state of Minnesota: white police officer Derek Chauvin publicly killed 46-year-old African-American George Perry Floyd, who was lying on the ground, by kneeling on his neck with his full body weight for nine minutes and 29 seconds, squeezing the air out of him until he died, despite numerous pleas from Floyd and surrounding witnesses. Three other police officers involved did not intervene. A witness video of the incident caused a worldwide sensation. The four police officers involved in the operation were fired after the video came to light and were taken into custody on suspicion of homicide. Immediately following the incident, large-scale protests in the wake of George Floyd's death in the United States and around the world were directed against police violence and racism and were themed "Black Lives Matter." On April 20, 2021, one of the four officers, lead defendant Derek Chauvin, was found guilty of manslaughter in the first degree and involuntary manslaughter.
