Especially from the end of 1943 onwards, strategic air raids in the Ruhr area intensified, and thus also against war-important armaments industries concentrated in Gelsenkirchen. Two thirds of all the city's apartments are damaged or destroyed at the end of the war. Not far from Gelsenkirchen's city centre, on Rotthauser Strasse, between two railway embankments, there is a small park with a day-care centre for children. At the entrance there is a large sign with the inscription "Kinderstation".
