Photochrom Collection: Journey around the world
It's been around for 150 years - the postcard. The Zurich lithographer Hans Jakob Schmid developed a new reproduction process at today's Photoglob AG in Zurich. A black-and-white negative was exposed on a stone slab with a light-sensitive asphalt layer. For Coloration, each color required its own, elaborately processed printing plate. Thus, in several printing passes, the following were created the unique photochrome postcards that went around the world. Here is a small selection of countries around the globe. Several thousand are still to be discovered under Photochrom. (key)
