Alois Estermann (1954-1998)
Alois Estermann was the 31st commander of the Swiss Guard. He became known for his heroic efforts during the attack on Pope John Paul II on 13 May 1981, and on 4 May 1998, a few hours after being appointed commander of the Swiss Guard, he and his wife were killed by Sergeant Cédric Tornay. (wp)
