After the return of the "Crew Dragon" spaceship developed by his company from the ISS to Earth, SpaceX founder Elon Musk was euphoric. He said on Sunday (local time) that the whole world could rejoice in this and consider it an "achievement of mankind". This is a new era of space flight and space exploration. The project had been worked on for 18 years. Before that, two months after the first manned launch of the "Crew Dragon" to the ISS, two US astronauts had returned to Earth. On Sunday afternoon (local time), Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley landed the Endeavour capsule in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of the US state of Florida. The two had taken off from the Cape Canaveral spaceport in Florida at the end of May. After a break of almost nine years, this was the first time that astronauts had flown to the ISS from the USA and the first time that they had been transported by a private space company. SpaceX had previously only transported cargo to the ISS. Most recently, astronauts had flown to the ISS on the "Atlantis" space shuttle in summer 2011. After that, the American space agency Nasa mothballed its space shuttle fleet for cost reasons and has since been dependent on Russia for flights to the ISS. At around 80 million euros per flight in a Russian Soyuz capsule, this was not only expensive, but also scratched the American ego. (Keystone-SDA)
