Arab Spring: Syria
In Syria, numerous opposition activists were arrested in February 2011 after initial calls for protests. In the following weeks, thousands of people demonstrated in the city of Dar'a for political freedoms and the overthrow of the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Even the formation of a new government and the lifting of the state of emergency in April could not prevent the protests from spreading to many cities throughout the country. Security forces have been violently attacking demonstrators since mid-March 2011. Since summer 2011, deserting soldiers have formed the Free Syrian Army, which has declared the protection of civilians as its goal. The situation turned into a civil war that continues to this day.
