Ferry disaster "Estonia" (1994)
On 27 September 1994, after 19.15 hours, the "Estonia" departs from the port of the Estonian capital Tallinn and heads for Stockholm. The hinges of the bow flap are exposed to heavy loads during the rough sea. During the high swell, the bow visor breaks away and large quantities of water can enter the ship unhindered. As a result, the ferry has a strong turn-side and sinks within a short time. With 852 victims, the sinking of the Estonia is the most serious shipwreck in post-war European history. (wp)
