Robert Mugabe (1924-2019)
Robert Mugabe (21 February 1924-6 September 2019), former President of Zimbabwe for many years, is dead. This was confirmed by head of state Emmerson Mnangagwa on Twitter on Friday. Mugabe died at the age of 95. Mugabe had been forced to resign in 2017 following a military takeover. His successor Mnangagwa praised Mugabe in a tweet as an "icon of liberation". Mugabe died after prolonged medical treatment in Singapore. Life support measures were reportedly discontinued. Mugabe was a former guerrilla chief who took power after the end of white minority rule in 1980. He blamed Western sanctions for Zimbabwe's economic problems. Growing dissatisfaction with the country's government led to military intervention, a suspension procedure and major street demonstrations. In 2017, the long-term ruler was overthrown after 37 years in power. He had ruled the South African country with a hard hand. (autotranslate)
