First World War - women in war
The history of women in the First World War is not just a history of the "home front", where women were responsible for maintaining and feeding the family and replacing the shortage of labour in the fields and factories. Many women also worked directly at the front as nurses, assistants and last but not least as soldiers. The First World War caused perhaps the greatest distortion of gender roles to date and in the post-war years helped to break through equality laws and women's suffrage in some places. (luk)
