Switzerland Valais Hazardous Waste Deposit Gamsenried | in retrospect
The former Gamsenried landfill near Brig-Glis in the canton of Valais is one of Switzerland's largest and most complex contaminated sites: between 1918 and 1978, Lonza disposed mainly of contaminated chemical waste from its Visp plant there. The site was classified as requiring remediation in 2011, after mercury, aniline, benzene and benzidine, among other substances, were detected in the groundwater. A 1.6-kilometer-long and 30-meter-deep slurry wall is planned as the first major remediation step - but the start of construction has again been delayed. (luk)
