Chernobyl disaster (1986)
The Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred on April 26, 1986, at 1:23 a.m. local time in Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the Ukrainian city of Pripyat. On the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES), it was classified as the first incident to reach the highest category, INES 7. The accident occurred during a power supply test. The release of radioactive materials contaminated large parts of Europe. The consequences for people and the environment were particularly catastrophic in areas of present-day Ukraine and Belarus. The last reactor unit, Unit 3, was shut down on December 15, 2000. (klt)
