From the 1950s onwards, winter tyres became widely used, and since the 1970s they have been considered practically mandatory in winter. For many years, spikes were also a familiar sight on the roads, especially in snowy regions, while snow chains became indispensable in extreme weather and on alpine routes and are still required in some places.
