SUPSI Research: Asian Tiger Mosquito
In Ticino, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is studying the behaviour and spread of the invasive Asian tiger mosquito, a member of the mosquito family. These insects can potentially transmit dangerous viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, or Zika - a risk that is increasing in Europe due to climate change. The goal of SUPSI's research is to improve early warning systems and develop targeted control strategies. One approach involves releasing sterile male mosquitoes bred in the lab. When they mate with females, the resulting eggs are not fertilized. SUPSI's research is considered a leading example in Europe both scientifically and in terms of its societal relevance. (oro)
