Switzerland Civilian Service | in Retrospective
After the adoption of the Civilian Service Act by the Swiss Parliament on 6 October 1995, civilian service was officially introduced in Switzerland on 1 October 1996 - a milestone preceded by decades of social struggle. Since the 1960s, protests and demonstrations had increasingly condemned the criminalization of conscientious objectors and called for a civilian alternative to military service. Yet the road to its implementation was long and controversial - and remains contested to this day. (luk)
