Coronavirus: Lockdown Emptiness
While the very essence of a photojournalist's job is to bear witness to actions and encounters by freezing fleeting moments, the pandemic is creating a vacuum and has put part of our lives on hold for a few months already. By visiting a series of iconic places in Switzerland, this series of photographs documents suspended time in high tourist spots that have become almost ghostly, such as the Jungfraujoch, the Gornergrat or the Aletsch glacier. Other empty places illustrating the fields of education, work, transport or leisure are contrasted by their symbolic or visual aspect with places teeming with activity. The maintenance of the Swiss fleet on the tarmac of the Düebendorf military airport, the activity worthy of the great holiday season at Galaxus/Digitec or the discovery of a Swisscom datacenter, a pillar of our communications of all kinds, are witnesses to a society that behind barriers or the walls of our homes is still very much alive. The result is a patchwork of non instants, an accumulation of poses of suspended time, to remember these places that had not been empty for decades for some, while the stages of deconfinement now follow one another.
