Sugar Ray Robinson (1921-1989)
Sugar Ray Robinson (born May 3, 1921 in Ailey, Georgia as Walker Smith, Jr; died April 12, 1989 in Culver City, California) was an American boxer. Acclaimed welterweight and middleweight champion of the world in the forties and fifties, Sugar Ray Robinson is considered one of the most illustrious boxers in history. His palmarès of 173 victories - 108 of them by knockout - in 200 professional fights and his eight-year streak of 91 fights without defeat led America's trade press to invent the expression "pound-for-pound best". His flamboyant lifestyle is also remembered: Robinson was the first of his guild to acquire an entourage and throw dollars around. This later led to financial difficulties, as well as health problems. Robinson died at the age of 68 in Los Angeles as a result of Alzheimer's disease.
