Alexander "Alex" Frei (*15 July 1979 in Basel) is a former Swiss football player and record goal scorer for the Swiss national team, as well as a coach. Following the dismissal of coach Raphael Wicky at FC Basel on 26 July 2018, Frei took over his role for a month on an interim basis, having already worked for the club as a youth coach since summer 2016. Frei was introduced as the new coach of FC Wil at the beginning of September 2020. He resigned from this position in November 2021 at his own request. In December 2021, he signed a contract as head coach of FC Winterthur. As coach of the second half of the season, he thus contributed to the return of Winterthur to the Super League after a 37-year absence. On 23 May 2022, it was announced that Frei would become head coach at FC Basel next season. He signed a contract for two years. After six winless games and only one point from the first three league games of 2023, Frei was sacked on 7 February 2023. (autotranslate)
