Series of Accidents in Mitholz (1945-1948)
The village of Mitholz has been in the public eye regularly since mid-2018 - since it became known that tons of ammunition were still lying in the Kander valley after the explosion of 1947. However, it was never brought to light that the explosion of the ammunition depot was not the only disaster that had struck this place in a short time. Heavy avalanches fall almost every winter anyway. But in August 1945, a major landslide occurred, causing the Kander to burst its dam and covering fields and farmland with debris. There were also two fatalities. On 19 December, there was a severe explosion and a year later, again in August 1948, the mountain slid again and brought destruction to the village. Those who have their home in Mitholz must therefore have learned to live with the forces of nature and war. (luk)
