It's a love-hate relationship: Switzerland and motorsport. The Alpine country was once a proud Grand Prix nation, then all circuit racing was banned. But even before the start of Formula 1, international Grand Prix races were held from 1934 to 1939 - Switzerland was among them. But outside of Formula 1, Switzerland remained actively involved in racing. Racing took place on tracks of the most varied character. There were short sprints not far from towns as well as demanding courses over 20 km long, such as the mountain race on the Klausen Pass. Some of these racing events remained unique, others went down in history as legendary. Here we look back at the emotions on the Swiss race tracks of the past, where it was not always just about the best time, but also whether the drivers would even reach the finish line in their speeding crates - all without helmets.
